Our mission is to break the cycles of housing instability, neighborhood blight, and poverty in Memphis. We accomplish this by providing foundational, affordable housing to those who have served our nation, built our communities, and are seeking a second chance. We believe that a safe home is the first step toward a stable life.
We are dedicated combatants in the fight against urban decay. We actively acquire and transform blighted and vacant properties—the very symbols of neglect—into beautiful, safe, and affordable homes. This work does more than house people; it restores dignity, stabilizes blocks, deters crime, and rebuilds community pride.
Our commitment extends beyond our walls. We advocate for the children of our community, fighting for safe afterschool havens that provide alternatives to the streets. Through strategic partnerships and unwavering compassion, we strive to empower every individual we serve. We are building a Memphis where everyone has a place to call home and the support to thrive.
MACDC is a nonprofit, community development corporation dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods in Memphis. We focus on creating sustainable communities by providing affordable homeownership opportunities, restoring blighted properties, and offering financial education to empower residents.
Our work is focused on specific core neighborhoods in Memphis, often targeting areas with high rates of vacancy and disinvestment. Please visit our "Our Neighborhoods" page or contact us directly to see if the community you're interested in is within our service area.
We build and renovate homes for sale to income-qualified buyers. The process starts by attending our mandatory First-Time Homebuyer Education Workshop. This workshop will equip you with the knowledge and tools to navigate the homebuying process successfully. After completing the workshop, you can work with our team to determine your eligibility and view available properties.
Our homes are targeted toward low-to-moderate income families. Specific income limits are based on your household size and the current Area Median Income (AMI) guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Our housing counselors can help you determine your eligibility during the application process.
Yes, we understand that the down payment is a major hurdle. MACDC works to connect qualified homebuyers with various down payment assistance programs, grants, and affordable first mortgage products to make purchasing a home more accessible
While our primary focus is creating affordable homeownership opportunities, we sometimes have rental properties available as part of our community stabilization efforts. Availability is limited, so please contact us to inquire about current rental opportunities.
We may be able to help through specific programs aimed at preserving existing housing stock. This can include critical health and safety repairs or weatherization for eligible homeowners. Please contact us to learn more about the current availability and scope of our home repair services.
As a nonprofit, our work is made possible through a combination of funding sources, including grants from federal and local government, investments from financial institutions, support from private foundations, and charitable donations from individuals and corporations who believe in our mission.
There are several ways to support our work! You can make a tax-deductible donation, volunteer for community cleanup or beautification projects, or help spread the word about our programs. Visit our "Get Involved" or "Donate" page to learn more.
Our mission goes beyond bricks and mortar. We engage in comprehensive community development, which includes partnering with local organizations on initiatives like community gardens, public space improvements, and supporting small businesses to create vibrant, thriving neighborhoods where people love to live.
Yes, we encourage it! While we cannot act on every property, we actively identify and acquire blighted properties for redevelopment. Please contact us with the property address, and our team will evaluate it as a potential candidate for our pipeline based on our strategic priorities.
We often accept certificates from HUD-approved housing counseling agencies. Please provide our housing counselor with a copy of your certificate, and we will review it to ensure it meets our program requirements for purchasing one of our homes.
